I agree with you that most of the Indian Organizations did not have or even realise the need for a “well oiled marketing system”. Situation looks to have changed now or is it the down turn due to which US or UK have ceased taking marketing services from India and Indian marketing service providers had to (still continue to)hit hard on Indian clients, impact of which has made them look at building or outsourcing Marketing fucntions.
